Abstract

The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between Organizational Citizenship Behaviours (OCB) and emotional intelligence. According to Organ (1988), OCB manifestation refers to individual behaviour that is discretionary, not directly o explicitly recognized by the formal system of rewards that promotes organization’s effectiveness and efficiency. Whereas emotional intelligence talks about the capacity to recognize the own feelings and of the others, to self-motivate and to handle the emotions for itself indeed and towards the others (Goleman, 1998). The sample of the study consisted of 326 employees of a pharmaceutical company of Puerto Rico. There was a positive and a significant relation between the organizational citizenship, altruism, courtesy, sportsmanship and civil virtue with emotional intelligence and its dimensions. However, the conscientiousness scale did not relate to any of the emotional scales which was opposed to what we expected. The possible implications of the findings in the organizational context are discussed.
